The Research Centre for Eastern and South Eastern Europe (Wissenschaftszentrum Ost- und Südosteuropa Regensburg WiOS) was founded in 2007. It is a common platform for two independent research institutes focussing on Eastern and South Eastern Europe. The members of WiOS are the Institute for East European Law (Institut für Ostrecht München e.V.) and the Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) (Leibniz-Institut für Ost- und Südosteuropaforschung). Until 2007, these institutions were located in Munich and are now for the first time united under the same roof. The University of Regensburg is an active sponsor and partner of the WiOS.
WiOS combines the joint expertise of its member institutes. The Institute for East European Law conducts theoretical and practical research as well as consults on the laws of the East European states. The Institute for East and Southeast European Studies distinguishes itself by the pooling of historical and economic expertise and the research on Eastern and Southeastern Europe.
The both institutes run a joint library on the premises of WiOS. With almost 350,000 items on Eastern and South Eastern Europe’s past and present, this library is one of the world’s biggest public libraries in its field.
All WiOS member institutes conduct fundamental research, publish renowned journals and offer services and consulting both to the scientific community and the wider public. Starting in autumn 2008, WiOS organises a monthly series of lectures held by external guests as well as by experts from its member institutes. Furthermore, WiOS serves as a platform for symposia. The Friends of WiOS Library Association offers additional events and possibilities for active participation.
